What do you need to consider for the CE marking?

CE-mark

The CE marking indicates that a product was assessed by the manufacturer and meets all EU safety, health, and environmental requirements. The ecodesign requirements are one essential regulation to be covered, i.e. there is no special marking regarding compliance with Ecodesign.

The CE marking must be applied before placing the product on the market.

If the importer, distributor, or another operator places products on the market under their name or trademark or modifies them, they then take over the manufacturer’s responsibilities and have to comply with all relevant EU requirements. It is not allowed to use the CE marking on products, where EU legislation does not foresee that a CE marking must be present.

How to place the CE marking

The CE marking must be affixed:

  • Visibly; however, if the CE Marking cannot be affixed to the product, it is allowed to affix it to the packaging or any accompanying documents. “Visible on the product” does not necessarily mean “visible during use of the product”.
  • Legibly: it is not allowed to make the CE marking smaller than 5 mm unless specified in the relevant product requirements.
  • Indelibly: The CE marking must be indelible from the product, nameplate, packaging or documents.

What to add to the CE marking

Where a notified body/bodies is/are involved in the production control phase, the body/bodies (or, under its/their instructions, the manufacturer or his authorised representative) shall print its/their identification number(s) next to the CE marking.

Other markings that might impair the visibility of the CE marking are not allowed.

Design and size of the CE marking

The CE marking must have a height of at least 5 mm.

It must have exactly the right shape.

Important note:
It is not allowed to use the CE mark for products not covered by the New Approach directives.
