Energy label and the product information sheet
From the 20th June 2025 it will be much easier for customers to choose more durable phones, thanks to a new energy labelling regulation (EU) 2023/1669. that focus on repairability, reliability etc. scores.
Two important tools in this new regulation are:
- The energy label
- The product information sheet (PIS)
The energy label
The first major change that consumers will notice is the new energy label accompanying new smartphones and slate tablets. This energy label resembles the one that already exists for household appliances (like fridges and washing machines) but contains additional useful information such as:
- The repeated free-fall reliability class.
The products class is determined on the basis of the number of falls from 1 meter that the device can withstand without functionality problems. The scale goes from A to E, where A is the most robust and E the least robust. - Battery endurance per cycle
This means, the number of hours a smartphone or tablet can operate with a fully charged battery until the device automatically shuts down due to an empty battery.
For example, if a smartphone has a battery endurance of 10 hours per cycle, it means you can expect to be able to use it for around 10 hours before needing to recharge it (to note that the 10 hours of this example have been determined on the basis of a standardised test of usage).
- The repairability class of the product
A scale is used from A to E, where A is the most repairable, and E is the least repairable. - The Ingress protection rating
This is an indication of the resistance of the product to water and dust. This is indicated by an IP code from 1 to 8, where 1 = very little and 8 = very well protected. - The battery endurance
The number of charges a battery can withstand until its capacity has reached 80% of its nominal capacity.
The Product Information Sheet (PIS)
Each product in scope of the energy labelling regulation must have a "Product information sheet" (PIS).
The purpose of the PIS is to make information about specific energy performance and environmental-related information about a product available for the public.
You can find and download a PIS for a specific product in EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling)
